Enhancing Trainer Effectiveness in the Gaming Industry

A gaming company recognized a need to enhance the effectiveness of its internal training team, which is responsible for onboarding new hires and conducting ongoing training for current employees. Despite having dedicated trainers, the company observed areas for improvement in how trainers developed, conducted, and evaluated their sessions and in their confidence in leading several types of training.

The project aimed to:

  • Improve the design, delivery, and evaluation skills of internal trainers
  • Boost trainers’ confidence in leading diverse training sessions effectively.

Solutions we ThinkUp:

HR

Challenges

  • Varied Training Backgrounds: Trainers had various levels of prior experience, making it difficult to create a one-size-fits-all program.

  • Engagement Levels: Trainers were used to traditional lecture-style methods, which made it challenging to shift towards more interactive techniques.

  • Evaluation Gaps: There was a lack of stadardized methods for evaluating training effectiveness, which made it challenging to measure the impact of training on performance.

  • Time Constraints: Trainers often had busy schedules, limiting the time available for them to engage in professional development activities.

The Solution:

Needs Assessment :

We began with a thorough needs assessment through surveys and interviews with both trainers and training participants. This helped identify specific areas where trainers required additional support, allowing us to design a tailored program that addressed these needs directly.

Designing a Customized "Train the Trainer" Program:

Based on the assessment findings, we developed a comprehensive “Train the Trainer” program focused on key skills, divided into three primary areas.

Designing Training Sessions:

  • Creating participant profiles and assessing training needs

  • Setting clear expectations, goals, and objectives

  • Planning schedules, timing, coordination, and grouping participants

  • Understanding the facilitator’s role and “selling” the training through design, marketing, and communication strategies

Conducting Training Sessions:

  • Emphasizing the importance of a welcoming atmosphere

  • Engaging and managing the audience effectively

  • Enhancing presentation, listening, and facilitation skills

  • Understanding group dynamics and using interactive techniques and technology to enhance learning

Evaluating Training Sessions and Follow-Up:

  • Using self-assessment questionnaires and gathering informal feedback from peers, managers, or mentors

  • Conducting focus groups, observing on-the-job performance, and analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs)

  • Implementing follow-up activities to reinforce learning

Our achievements

Trainers reported significant improvements in their confidence and instructional techniques:

70%

of trainers

Improved their use of interactive techniques.

75%

of trainers

80%

Business Impact

  • The company experienced a measurable business impact, with a 10% improvement in new hire performance metrics within their first three months, indicating the program’s success in enhancing the training process.

Conclusion

Through this targeted “Train the Trainer” program, the gaming company effectively enhanced its trainers’ skills, resulting in more engaging training sessions and improved performance among new hires, contributing to a more productive and motivated workforce.
